Bespoke software, United Kingdom, since 2000

Newline Software is a bespoke software development company in the United Kingdom. We design, build and support business systems, and have done since 2000, for companies that need software written around the way they work rather than the other way round.

About Newline

Who we work with
Owner-managed firms, technical leads at mid-sized companies, agencies, and early-stage companies
Engagements
Fixed-price projects, monthly retained work, and technical consultancy

We take on the design and construction of new systems, the integration of systems a business already runs, and the long-term maintenance of software that companies depend on every day. We work with owner-managed firms and mid-sized companies, and with agencies and consultancies that need additional senior engineering capacity for their own clients. More about the company and its founder

What we do

We cover the whole life of a system, from the first scoping conversation through construction and release to the years of support that follow. These are the services clients most often come to us for.
  1. Bespoke software

Systems designed around a specific business and its processes, where a packaged product would need too many workarounds to be worth the licence. Order management, scheduling, quoting and internal tooling.Read more
  2. Web applications

Browser-based applications for staff and customers, built to be secure, quick and straightforward to maintain. Written so that another competent developer could take them over later without our help.Read more
  3. APIs and integration

Connecting the systems a business already runs so that information moves between them without re-keying. Accounts packages, CRMs, warehouse systems, payment providers and third-party APIs.Read more
  4. Cloud and modernisation

Moving applications and data to Microsoft Azure or AWS with a costed plan, in stages that can be tested and reversed. Reducing the cost of cloud estates that have grown larger than the business needs.Read more
  5. Mobile applications

iOS and Android applications that share a backend with your web systems. One set of business rules and one source of data across every device your staff and customers use.Read more
  6. Legacy systems

Taking over software whose original developers have moved on. We document it, stabilise it, and then improve or replace it at a pace the business can absorb, without a risky big-bang rewrite.Read more
  7. Technical consultancy

Architecture reviews, technology selection, supplier assessment and part-time technical leadership for companies that need senior direction but not a full-time CTO or an in-house team.Read more
  8. Support and maintenance

Ongoing monitoring, fixes and small improvements under a monthly agreement, so that the systems we build, and some we did not, carry on working as the business changes around them.Read more

How we work

Every engagement follows the same five stages. Clients see working software early and know what they are paying for at each step.
  1. Discovery

We meet, ask a lot of questions, and write down what the system needs to do and why. You receive a short scoping document and an estimate.

  2. Design

We produce the architecture, data model and plan of work in plain language, and walk you through it before anything is built.

  3. Build

We work in cycles of one to two weeks. At the end of each cycle you see, and can use, what has been built so far.

  4. Release

The system is tested, documented and deployed into your environment. We train your staff and hand over the source code and infrastructure.

  5. Support

After release we remain available under a monthly agreement for monitoring, fixes and improvements.

Working with us

The person you speak to first is the person who scopes the work and builds it. We do not hand projects to a junior team once the contract is signed.
Fixed price or fixed monthly
Agreed before work starts. No open-ended time and materials.
You own everything we produce
Source code, documentation, accounts and infrastructure.
One point of contact
The engineer doing the work, throughout.
Written plans and estimates
Reviewed with you before each stage.

Where the scope is clear we quote a fixed price. Where it is still being worked out we charge a fixed monthly amount against an agreed list of priorities, reviewed with you each month. In either case you own the source code, the documentation and the infrastructure from the first day. You are free to take them elsewhere at any time.

Our estimates, plans and invoices are written in ordinary English. If something changes during a project, you hear about it from us first.

Technology

We choose technology to suit the problem and the people who will maintain the system afterwards, and we favour mature platforms with long support lives over whatever is newest. We build web, mobile and desktop applications, APIs and backend services. Recent work has used the following, and this is only part of it.

  • C#
  • .NET and ASP.NET Core
  • TypeScript
  • JavaScript
  • React
  • Next.js
  • Python
  • SQL Server
  • PostgreSQL
  • MySQL
  • MariaDB
  • SQLite
  • Oracle
  • Convex
  • Supabase
  • Microsoft Azure
  • AWS

A short call is usually enough to tell you whether we can help, roughly what it would cost and how long it would take. We reply to every enquiry within one working day.
